The Steam Sale strikes yet again! For roughly $20, I grabbed Dawn of War 2 and both the expansions. I couldn't resist... because if nothing else this blog has proven that I have little to no self-control.
Dawn of War 2 is a Real-Time Strategy game, but based in the world of Warhammer 40,000. As I have mentioned more than a few times, that is a background I am very familiar with, and find myself drawn to. I haven't played a lot of RTS games during the Backlog period, and that's because for the most part I don't enjoy them. Starcraft might be the last RTS I really spent a load of time on, and eventually all of those games devolve into rushes where the person who makes the fewest mistakes wins. It can be argued that this is exactly what makes these games competitive and interesting, but for me it gets boring fast.
I hadn't even played an RTS after Warcraft 3, until I found the original Dawn of War for cheap someplace and figured it might be a solid substitute for the tabletop game that I'll most likely never play again. It ended up being a far better game, based on the rules and backgrounds of WH40K, but with a much faster gameplay. While I never bothered with the multiplayer, I really liked the flavor and feel of the game.
I don't know much about Dawn of War 2, except that it got generally positive reviews and that I liked the original Dawn of War. I won't get a chance to play it until after New Year's Day (I have houseguests staying in my office / guestroom until then), but I'm looking forward to it. Only a few more days of this damnable Steam sale...
